A Pastoral Service of Pauline Priests and Brothers, SAMBUHAY is a liturgical resource material aimed to help Pastors and Ministers of the Word in their weekly preparations for the Sunday Eucharist, and the Church faithful in their active participation in the Sunday Mass.
Aside from the Sacramentary Prayers and Lectionary Readings for the Sunday Mass, each weekly 4-page issue contains: a one-page front article on the Gospel; short introductions for the Mass proper, for each of the Mass readings; Gospel-based “Prayers of the Faithful” that also integrate themes suggested by local church; a boxed article on a highlighted word or phrase from the Sunday Gospel.
There are Different Editions of SAMBUHAY: English Edition (started on July 5, 1987 with the 14th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year A); Tagalog Edition (started on July 5, 1987 with the 14th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year A); Hiligaynon Edition (started on January 1, 2000 with the Solemn Feast of Mary, Mother of God); the First Friday Edition (started on January 2, 1998 with the liturgy of “January 2-before Epiphany”).
The Philippine Missalette was inspired by Sunday mass guides published by Pauline priests and brothers in other places: “La Domenica” in Italy, “El Domingo” in South America. The Philippine project was established during the term of Fr. Apolinar Castor as SSP Regional Superior. He assigned Fr. Domie Guzman as Founding Editor. Fr. Guzman was then yet a senior student in Theology at the Loyola School of Theology, Ateneo de Manila University.
The name SAMBUHAY was coined by Fr. Domie Guzman in consultation with Msgr. Sabino Vengco, a diocesan priest who specialized in Liturgy. He was a professor of Fr. Guzman, and is a good friend and collaborator of the Paulines in the Philippines. In fact, he has published a good number of books, VCDs and DVDs with ST PAULS.
Worship (SAMBA) and Life (BUHAY). This is the editorial line of our Pauline Philippine Missalette: with the Gospel reflections, Liturgical introductions and notes, and contextualized “Prayers of the Faithful”… we want to contribute in making the Sunday Eucharist the source and summit of the daily Christian life of our partners-in-mission, that is, the pastors and faithful who use our publication.
Pauline Priests and Brothers who have served as editors of SAMBUHAY are: Fr. Domie Guzman, Fr. Tim Melliza, Fr. Gil Alinsangan, Fr. Cris Cellan, Fr. Ramil Tapang, Fr. Joven Lagdamen, Fr. Restie de la Peña, Fr. Apolinar Castor Jr., Fr. Rollin Flores, Bro. Hansel Mapayo. A good number of Pauline priests, brothers, clerics, seminarians and sisters – as well as other collaborators from other religious congregations – and even lay persons make up the pool of resource writers for the reflections. Fr. Armand Tangi, a Filipino Pauline priest known for his paintings, is the designer of the original masthead of the Missalette.
SAMBUHAY Online service became available in 1999. The first uploaded issue of the Sunday missalette was for June 13, 1999, then the 11th Sunday in Ordinary Time (Year A). Fr. Ludovico Tacdoro Jr., pioneered this online edition of SAMBUHAY which has greatly helped Filipino chaplaincies abroad.
